Who we serve

OUR STORY

Literacy and More began in 2021 with a mission to promote literacy by placing a book in every child’s hand. Founded by Rachel Honore, a community advocate with over 15 years of direct experience serving and living in West Philadelphia.

Prior to founding Literacy and More, Rachel worked What began as a simple book distribution and early education promotion project evolved after directly conversing with parents, which revealed other urgent, unmet needs.

Since then, Literacy and More has taken a direct, collaborative, on-the-ground approach to supporting under-resourced families. Resources go straight to families through hands-on community events, held in partnership with other organizations across Philadelphia.

THE BARRIERS FAMILIES FACE

While speaking with parents at these events, Rachel learned that neurodivergent children in under-resourced communities face barriers that go beyond access to books. Many families struggle to get an early diagnosis or find support, often having to navigate hostile systems largely on their own.

Public spaces designed with young children in mind are frequently inaccessible to families with neurodivergent children due to a lack of sensitivity to sensory needs. Parents have described feeling ostracized or judged in these spaces and being met with rude stares or aggressive behavior rather than understanding.

OUR VISION

Literacy and More envisions a world where equitable outcomes for neurodivergent children in low-income communities are the standard, not the exception. We also work to build a broader culture of awareness and acceptance around neurodivergence by creating spaces where that acceptance can take root.
