Literacy and More is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide access to community resources for the empowerment of Philadelphia families living in resource-scarce areas.
Literacy and More was founded by Rachel Honore who has been a resident of West Philadelphia since the 1990s. It was her own experience navigating the early childhood education system where an interest in informing other parents in her community on crucial services and resources that gave children a successful head-start regardless of socioeconomic status. Since then Rachel has taken part in numerous initiatives, committees, panels, and organizations that focus on providing early education resources to those who need it most. She is currently co-chair of Read by 4th Homeworking Libraries Group and also sits on the advisory board for the Please Touch Museum.
A decade of speaking and working with a families of different makeups and hardships inspired her to envision an organization that would provide resources which would allow parents to build their own reading environment with their children at home, free of charge and with more flexibility than a traditional library or classroom setting.
As a parent, our Founder experienced firsthand the difficulties of finding quality education resources and was amazed by the number of services and benefits available but not well known to her or others in the community. Today, Literacy and More exists to act as a channel of communication between quality resources and the families that need them. We assist other parents as they navigate the complex system of finding and applying to quality education centers. Our goal is to provide children with the social, emotional, and literacy skills they need to succeed when they reach school age and equip parents with the knowledge they need to make the best decision for their child's nursery education.
Literacy and More envisions a world in which all children and their parents are literate, informed and healthy. We will continue to expand our workshops and assistance programs as well as work with partners, funders and policy makers to create a community that supports literacy for all. Parents are our most important partners in achieving this vision. We will continue to connect with families by focusing on life skills, parenting and the importance of family literacy. We believe that the key to improving education and child care is filling the gaps in the current system to make it work better for both providers and parents.
At Literacy and More, we provide parents with the confidence and space to discover the best resources, not just for reading, but for a lifetime. Whether they are seeking a school or a program, a workshop or a book, our mission is to support parents as they nurture their child's love of literacy and joy in reading. We envision a world where every child is reading early.
The heart of Literacy and More is our single-day resource and literacy fairs. They are held throughout the city of Philadelphia and provide parents and children with access to free literature material, information sessions, and storytelling workshops. Our fairs aim to provide parents and children with the resources they need to succeed in school and life. Each fair offers a variety of different resources, from books to educational materials to information and storytelling sessions on a variety of topics.
Literacy and More partners with local and national children's book vendors to provide free take-home books for families living in book deserts. Children get to select their own books, which not only engage them in the process of putting together their very own library, but also allow them to become emotionally attached to their book choice and the act of reading.
